Reminder: Childhood is Short but so is Life
And all my childhood memories
-“DEAR Mama”-Tupac shakur
Are full of all the sweet things you did for me
Hi! My name is Lauren. I’m a 90’s teen. Love 2pac and Nirvana. Born, raised and will live and (probably) die in Los Angeles, California. (After many, many years from now and a life well savored of course).
As an older mom, I feel I’ve gained a lot of wisdom not just years…
I was diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy. My baby is truly my angel and my biggest blessing, Surviving and thriving nowadays!
Having faced my own mortality helps me as a mom to remember what’s really important. I really do savor each and every moment.
And I know these moments are what will become memories. It’s the memories that remain. Really, it’s the best gift we give our kids.
A Story that Inspires Me
I’m inspired by this story I read from July 2022.
My own grandmother had Alzheimer’s disease so this story was especially poignant for me. Anyone who is familiar with it knows how devastating it is. It’s like losing the person you remember twice. Once during the time they are slowly losing their memory and mind. And the other at the actual time of death.
The story is about a mom at the beach with her kids and meets an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s disease. She asks the elder about her best “Mom advice”.
The elder woman’s response was deep and lasting. “She looked around at the kids and said, ‘The best thing we can do as moms is to simply create memories.”
Advice like this is something I will remember forever as I navigate this thing called motherhood. And it is my hope that you too will remember this sentiment on your own journey.
